Chris van Niekerk is a professional architect with 13 years’ experience in high-end residential and commercial projects in South Africa. He was the recipient of the South African Corobrik award in 2003, the most sought after architectural award at student level for his thesis entitled ‘Extraneousness’ which was published in ‘Visions of the Future’ by the Royal Institute of British Architecture in 2003.
He was awarded a scholarship for the MSc(Arch) degree at TUDelft in the Netherlands, whilst taking up a position at Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects in London in 2003. In 2004, he moved to Cape Town, where he gained experience designing multi-use and high-end residential architecture and interiors in collaboration with South African architects. Since 2007, he has been in private practice in a company he founded called The Fold Architects.
To fold is to manipulate the rigid costume of architecture around its flexible body. Folding is achieved when place, use and materials vibrate in harmony.
Based in Cape Town, South Africa, the studio offers full and partial architectural services, interior design, 3D visualisation, marketing material as well as project administration, with projects undertaken in the residential, interior, commercial and media sectors. The Fold Architects is a corporate member of the South African Institute of Architects and principal architect Chris van Niekerk is a member of the South African Council for the Architectural Profession, the South African Institute of Architects and the Cape Institute for Architecture.
