The Fold / Architects

Work Information

To fold is to manipulate the rigid costume of architecture around its flexible body. Folding is achieved when place, use and materials vibrate in harmony.

Founded in 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa, the studio offers full and partial architectural services, interior design, 3D visualisation, marketing material as well as project administration, with projects undertaken in the residential, interior, commercial and media sectors. The Fold Architects is a corporate member of the South African Institute of Architects.

Principal Chris van Niekerk completed the B.Arch degree with distinction at the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2002. He was the recipient of the National Corobrik award in 2003, the most sought after architectural award at student level for his thesis entitled ‘Extraneousness’ which was also published in ‘Visions for the Future’, by the Royal Institute of British Architecture in 2003.

He was awarded a scholarship for the MSc(Arch) degree at TUDelft in the Netherlands, whilst taking up a position as Part 2 architect at Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects (now Erick van Egeraat) in London.
